Check out this article about Ken Chenault’s leadership. I had the privilege and honor of working at AMEX under his leadership and experienced these things personally.
Ken’s mantra during a business crisis: “Define reality, give hope and communicate…You've got to be both compassionate and decisive, because people are going through emotional turmoil. They want to see if you truly care. But what they also want to see is that you can fashion a game plan to take them from where they are today to where the company needs to go.” He took AMEX through the aftermath of 9/11 sticking to his values and it was heartening to experience and so necessary during such a crisis. #CompassionateLeadership #LeadingByExample #LeadingThroughCrisis #EthicalLeadership Do you have "imposter syndrome?" There is no power greater than a community discovering what it cares about. Ask “What’s possible?” not “What’s wrong?” Keep asking. Notice what you care about. Assume that many others share your dreams. Be brave enough to start a conversation that matters. Talk to people you know. Talk to people you don’t know. Talk to people you never talk to. Be intrigued by the differences you hear. Expect to be surprised. Treasure curiosity more than certainty. Invite in everybody who cares to work on what’s possible. Acknowledge that everyone is an expert about something. Know that creative solutions come from new connections. Remember, you don’t fear people whose story you know. Real listening always brings people closer together. Trust that meaningful conversations can change your world. Rely on human goodness. Stay together. -Meg Wheatley [Wheatley, M. J. (2010). Turning to one another: Simple conversations to restore hope to the future.] One of Dr. Wheatley's most powerful statements: "Treasure curiosity more than certainty." And this is very hard. I work at it every day. Still not there. I'm always a work in progress. -Lisa
